Peanut Butter Sandwiches

Susan Soleil, the Charter for Compassion's director of development is a champion of volunteering. You'll see what I mean when you read her message below. Interestingly, she coupled her own acts of volunteering with Martin Luther King's quote reminding us of our duty towards others. Duty points to a certain principle we hold toward ourselves and to others. Duty implies acting in a principled and compassionate way. It is the marrow in our bones that shows our strength and our purpose. This dutiful compassion is an honor we hold for others.

What am I doing for others? That is a question I ask myself often. More than just my immediate family: What am I doing to help my extended family? My neighbors? My community?

These questions help determine how I spend some of my spare time. Whether I am helping a sister tile her shower, assisting a neighbor with her yard work, or serving on the board of a sweet charter school that is a safe space for LGBTQIA+ high school students in my area, I am getting back as much or even more than I give.

To illustrate this generous flow back to me when I am serving others, I want to quote my grandfather, Clay Allred. He often said, "I cast my bread upon the waters and it comes back peanut butter sandwiches!"

I hope I will always find ways to help others and volunteer my time. It helps make my corner of the world a better place and the peanut butter sandwiches are delicious.
